The Left parties have supported the government on the issue of the PMO’s letter to the CBI in the case against L K Advani following the demolition of the Babri masjid.

‘‘There is no harm in the government asking the CBI for details on the status of the case. In fact, the court had said that the case should not be quashed,’’ CPI(M) general secretary Prakash Karat said. He also said that the CPI(M) wanted the government to pursue the case against the BJP leader.

However, he made it clear that he did not accept the government’s position in the Quattrocchi case, that it could not prevail on the CBI to pursue the matter because it functioned independently.

CPI leader Gurudas Dasgupta also endorsed Karat’s view in the matter. ‘‘I support the government stand that he was illegally let off by the court. Also, the government has not asked him to be implicated in a secretive way.’’

However, the CPI(M) has asked for a short duration discussion on the issue saying that the matter needed to be clarified because the Opposition on the one hand described the PMO’s letter as interference, while the government claimed it had only asked for information.
