‘Left should reconsider its relation with the Centre’

CPI leader Gurudas Dasgupta has said that time has come for the Left parties to reconsider their relationship with the UPA.

Accusing the UPA government of ‘grossly mismanaging’ the country’s economy, senior CPI leader Gurudas Dasgupta on Tuesday said time has come for the Left parties to reconsider their relationship with the ruling coalition.

“I believe situation has come when the Left parties should reconsider their relationship with the government. Situation should have its own logic,” he told reporters in Hyderabad.

Asked if there is any time frame for the Left to withdraw its support to the UPA government, he replied in the negative.

“There can be no time frame because nobody can foretell what is going to happen. But really situation has become grave and grim,” he said.

“Clearly, there is a debate going on in the country that how long the Left will go on supporting the government. It is a healthy debate,” Dasgupta, the CPI leader in the Lok Sabha, said.

He, however, said prices would not come down in a single day even if the Left withdrew support.

Holding Finance Minister P Chidambaram and Planning Commission Deputy Chairperson Montek Singh Ahluwalia responsible for the economic failures of the UPA, Dasgupta said Prime Minister Manmohan Singh should take note as to why Chidambaram should continue to be at the helm of the Finance Ministry.

“This government has grossly mismanaged the economy. They have to pay the price. The price of petroleum products increased not due to international price. It is due the decisions of Chidambaram and Montek Singh Ahluwalia,” he said.
