St George’s (Grenada), April 15: A record fifth wicket partnership between two left-handers, century-maker Darren Lehmann and Michael Bevan, set up Australia’s 46-run victory over West Indies in their second One-day match yesterday.
The pair put on 172 (off 147 balls) to lift Australia to 288 for four, their highest limited overs total against West Indies, beating the 286 for nine scored in Georgetown in 1995. West Indies, who won the first match of the series of seven in St Vincent, were bowled out for 242 in 47.3 overs.
The stand between Lehmann and Bevan beat the previous Australian best for the fifth wicket against any country, the 159 Bevan and Ricky Ponting compiled against Sri Lanka in Melbourne in 1995-96.
Lehmann hammered an unbeaten 110 (92b, 10×4, 1×6), his first 50 coming off 48 balls and his second off just 40. Bevan’s 72 was scored off 74 balls. West Indies were always up against it after losing Brian Lara for nine. He dragged a ball from Damien Fleming on to his leg stump to leave his side unhappily placed on 18 for two.
Sherwin Campbell and Jimmy Adams did their best to pull the innings around with a third wicket stand of 84, but Adams’ dismissal by Shane Warne triggered a collapse to 140 for six.
Some spirited tailend batting kept the capacity crowd entertained but West Indies were never in with a realistic chance of turning the tables.
