Former West Bengal chief minister Jyoti Basu today said the Left parties were awaiting a letter from Prime Minister Manmohan Singh or UPA chairperson Sonia Gandhi for the resumption of UPA Coordination Committee meetings as early as possible.

“I have heard while I was in New Delhi that either Sonia Gandhi or Manmohan Singh is going to write to the Left leaders attached to the Coordination Committee. I think that if the committee starts functioning again, we will get to know about crucial decisions that are taken by the Cabinet,” said Basu.

Basu was speaking at an open CITU convention called to prepare for the all-India strike on September 29 to protest the “anti-worker” steps taken by the UPA government — disinvestment of PSUs, FDI in insurance sector, amendments to labour laws and hike in prices of petroleum products.

Criticising the Centre’s decision to hike prices of petrol and diesel, Basu said, “There will be much less confusion if the Union Government discusses such decisions with us, and not just inform us after taking a decision.”

“It is unfortunate that the Coordination Committee stopped functioning on the issue of the disinvestment of BHEL. Thereafter, we are not being informed of Cabinet decisions,” he added.
