Taiwanese -born filmmaker Ang Lee became the first Asian to win the Best Director Oscar, snatching the coveted award for his aching story of cowboys in love, Brokeback Mountain.But the 51-year-old director admitted that he had been caught off-guard by the surprise victory of the racial drama Crash in the coveted Best Picture category that Brokeback had been widely expected to win.“I’m so proud of the movie,” he said of Brokeback. They didn’t vote for it. I don’t know (why),’’ he said.He noted that Brokeback had done better at the box office than all five of the other nominated films. —AFP
