Lawyers of various bar associations across Uttar Pradesh went on strike and observed ‘Mourning Day’ on Monday to protest the serial blasts of Friday. Work was paralysed in every court, including the high courts at Allahabad and Lucknow.

In Lucknow, the lawyers also took out a protest rally and burnt the effigy of terrorist outfits like SIMI and HuJI.

Bar Council president A N Singh said November 28 will be observed as Anti-terrorism Day. “We also demand a compensation of Rs 10 lakh each for the dependents who died in the blast and a member each of their family be given a government job,” said Singh.

While lawyers staged demonstrations, paramilitary forces remained on guard at different strategic points in and around the court compounds.

Lawyer refuses to contest blast case

Varanasi: A lawyer representing Obaid-ur-Rehman — one of the seven accused in the July 28, 2005 Shramjeevi Express blast case — on Monday refused to contest the case. An application where Deepak Dey (the counsel) cited his inability to contest the case due to the November 23 blasts was submitted in the court of Additional District and Session Judge (III) Rajendra Chandra in Jaunpur district on Monday. Another lawyer, Shyam Sunder Tiwari, representing another accused also did not turn up for a hearing.
