MUMBAI, OCT 2: The Thane Consumer Protection Cell chairperson H S Ghare has ordered a Virar-based lawyer, Chandrasen Ramchandra Dighe, to pay his client Rs one lakh damages and as costs towards the suit. Kamalabai Raghunath Jatkar (90) has alleged that she lost the case due to `Dighe’s carelessness.’

Jatkar lived with her husband in a rented house until May 1982. When her husband fell seriously ill, she locked up the flat and shifted to the house of Meena Dhamankar, her married daughter, at Mulund for better access to medical facilities.

In September 1984, the owner of her Virar residence, Mohan Harnarayan Wani, got the Vasai court to intervene and secured possession of the premises. Jatkar’s daughter contested this claim and requested the court to reconsider its decision. However the court stuck to its ruling. Kamalabai then complained to the consumer cell alleging that her lawyer had “been careless and did not pay much attention to her case.” This, she claimed, had led to her losing her place ofresidence. She demanded Rs 3,00,000 as compensation from the advocate.

The chairperson ordered Dighe to pay her Rs 90,000 in damages and Rs 10,000 toward the costs incurred by her on the case.
