Despite a successful opening ceremony to the Commonwealth Games,Congress today indicated that axe is bound to fall on people found guilty of corruption in the preparations for the prestigious event. "Any allegation of corruption has to be investigated thoroughly by proper authorities and if anybody is found guilty,he has to be punished," party spokesperson Jayanthi Natarajan told reporters. She at the same time maintained that Congress' stand has always been that the Games should be conducted successfully as it concerned the nation. Her statement came against the backdrop of reports of alleged malpractices by some people in the Commonwealth Games Organising Committee headed by Suresh Kalmadi. It was a mix of both cheers and jeers for Kalmadi when he made his speech during the opening ceremony of the Games on Sunday. Asked whether the party disagrees with Rajya Sabha MP and party leader Mani Shankar Aiyar's strong criticism of the Games, the party spokesperson feigned ignorance about what the senior leader had said.
