KUALA LUMPUR, Sept 12: India, who had to win this match against South Africa to stay in contention for a semi-final berth, were in danger of losing their second straight game, as they trailed by a goal with just over 10 minutes left in the match.
After wasting eight penalty corners, India found the target with the ninth as Baljit Singh Dhillon flicked over the goalkeeper to put India 2-1 up with just three minutes left.
South Africa took the lead when Greg Nicol, who had a hat-trick in South Africa’s 3-3 draw against New Zealand, was at hand to slip in Gregg Clark’s pass against the run of play in the 22nd minute.
Pillay beat three defenders and put Prabhakaran Laxmanan through in the 59th minute, which brought India on level terms. Three minutes before time came Baljit Singh’s goal.
PAKISTAN ESCAPE DEFEAT: Canada squandered a 3-0 lead gained within 20 minutes to draw 3-3 in a Pool B match against former world champions Pakistan. Robin D’Abreo slammed Canada’s opening penalty corner in thethird minute. Even as Pakistan were trying to recover, Canada fired two more goals — skipper Peter Milkovich in the 15th and 19th minutes through penalty corner conversions.
Pakistan scored the first goal through Anis Muhammad in the 25th minute. Imran Yousaf missed a penalty stroke in the 31st minute when Canadian goalkeeper Mike Mahood palmed off the ball to the left. Imran made up with Pakistan’s second goal in the 39th minute through a penalty corner. Pakistan finally equalised through Atif Bashir in the 46th minute.
Aussies win easily
: Australia crushed Trinidad and Tobago 7-0 in their Pool A match. Lachlan Vivian-Taylor, 18, scored the first goal in the ninth minute. Stephen Davies scored four minutes later after Taylor had done the spadework. Jay Stacy converted a penalty corner and Australia went to half-time 3-0. Soon after the break, Michael Brennan struck twice, in the 37th and 38th minutes, while Taylor made it 6-0 by putting his stick to left-wing Matthew Smith’s pass. Stacy scoredagain in the 54th minute.
India beat T&T
The Indian women’s hockey team steamrolled Trinidad and Tobago 7-1 in their second Pool A match, Pritam Rani hammering in three goals.
Team captain Sita Gussain converted a penalty corner in the 10th minute. The Indians made it 2-0 through Pritam in the 22nd minute after which Kamla Dalal made it 3-0 in the 32nd minute. Pritam got her second five minutes after half-time.
S Chanu sounded the board in the 54th minute for the team’s fifth goal. Three minutes after Pritam had knocked in her third goal, Trinidad and Tobago got a penalty corner and Nicole Dixon found success. A goal five minutes from the hooter completed India’s tally.
