Alan Larson, under secretary, economic affairs of United States on Thursday began his two day visit to India and met Finance Minister Jaswant Singh to discuss methods to expand regional trade between India, Pakistan and Afghanistan.

Larson spent a day each in Kabul and Islamabad prior to coming to India to discuss potential areas and methods to increase trade.

Larson also delivered a letter from Lawrence Lindsey, assistant to the US president on economic policy issues, to Principal Secretary Brajesh Mishra.

This letter contained details of different methods to increase Indo-US cooperation. While the issue of Enron’s Dhabol power plant did come up, Larson said the focus was more on discussing areas of future cooperation between the two nations. Larson spoke to Jaswant Singh about the development effort in Afghanistan and the need for India to step up trade and other means to help Afghanistan.

Larson’s visit will be followed next week by that of Kenneth Juster who is the under secretary in the commerce department. And the week after that Paul O’Neil, treasury secretary will visit India.
