A valiant unbeaten 47 by Ramnaresh Sarwan, who came back to bat after being hit on the head by a Dilara Fernando delivery earlier in his innings, was not enough for the West Indies as they fell short of the target by six runs to lose to Sri Lanka in their Pool B match here today.
Needing 14 runs off the last over bowled by Pulasthi Gunarathne, the Caribbeans managed just eight runs. Chaminda Vaas was the pick of the Sri Lankan bowlers, finishing his quota of 10 overs with four for 22. West Indies, chasing 229 for victory, finished on 222-9.
Shivnarine Chanderpaul top-scored with 65. Chris Gayle (55), Ridley Jacobs (0) and Ricardo Powell (1) were earlier dismissed in quick succession to put Sri Lanka in charge. Sri Lanka made 228-6 from their 50 overs, captain Sanath Jayasuriya top-scoring with 66.
Opener Marvan Atapattu (three) was run out in the fourth over of the day when attempting a suicidal single, then Aravinda de Silva, looking in fine form, went the same way after a terrible mix-up with his skipper that saw both batsmen stranded at the same end on the third run.
Jayasuriya and Hashan Tillakaratne shared a second wicket partnership of 85 before Tillakaratne, hitting across the line, was clean bowled by medium pacer Wavell Hinds for 36 when set for a big score. Jayasuriya put together an uncharacteristically cautious fifty before he threw his wicket away through frustration.
Brief scores: Sri Lanka 228 for 6 off 50 overs (S Jayasuriya 66, H Tillekaratne 36, R Arnold 34 no, C Vaas 28 no; W Hinds 1-27, C Hooper 1-30, V Drakes 1-32) & West Indies: 222 for 9 in 50 overs (Chanderpaul 65, Sarwan 47 not out, Gayle 55, Vaas 4 for 22).
