New Delhi, June 10: RJD president Laloo Prasad Yadav today demanded an inquiry by a sitting Supreme Court judge into the "conduct" of Bihar Governor V C Pande and pledged that he and his Chief Minister wife Rabri Devi would "retire" from politics the day they were proved guilty.

"Let a sitting Supreme Court judge go into the conspiracy to dislodge our government and study the dubious role of the Governor in institution of false cases against me and my wife. If charges against us are proved we will retire from politics that very day," Yadav told a press conference.

The RJD chief, who earlier in the day met Congress president Sonia Gandhi, explained the position about the cases to convince her that they were politically motivated.

Yadav said he had requested her that she too should demand a thorough probe by a sitting judge of the Apex Court so that the facts came to light.

On questions whether Rabri Devi would relinquish Chief Ministership in view of framing of charges in a disproportionate assets case, an angry Yadav said "let Prime Minister Atal Behari Vajpayee first ask Home Minister L K Advani and HRD Minister Murli Manohar Joshi to step down following chargesheets against them in the Babri Mosque demolition case".

He asserted that Rabri Devi was "an innocent and pious lady" and all charges against her were framed with the objective of destabilising a democratically elected government.

Yadav, who flew to Delhi last evening shortly after the CBI designated court framed charges against him and his wife, met President K R Narayanan and the Prime Minister to demand recall of the Governor and institution of a commission of inquiry against Pande to probe his "misconduct."

Yadav’s hour-long closed door meeting with Sonia assumes significance as Congress is a partner in the RJD-led Government in Bihar and there have been strong demands both inside and outside Congress for reviewing its stand on supporting a scam-tainted Chief Minister.

Asked what the Prime Minster told him after receiving the memorandum, the former Bihar Chief Minister said "he only heard us and kept mum."

Janata Party president Subramanian Swamy, who was also present at the press conference, said he would launch a nationwide campaign to highlight the "conspiracy" against Yadav.

Swamy said his party would forge an alliance with RJD and a formal announcement was likely sometime next week.
