The Supreme Court today refused to entertain a public interest litigation on the issue of induction of ‘‘tainted’’ ministers into the Cabinet, as the issue was currently being debated in Parliament.
A three-judge bench said it would be premature for it to interfere in the issue. ‘‘Let us wait for Parliament to decide the matter and, if it formulates any law, we will look into it,’’ the bench observed.
At present, there is no law to prevent the inclusion of ‘‘tainted’’ persons into the Council of Ministers, the bench added.
Hailing the Supreme Court’s decision, Union Railway Minister Laloo Prasad Yadav said the court has given a ‘‘befitting reply’’ to the NDA, which has been raising a hue and cry over a ‘‘non-issue’’.
‘‘Will the NDA leaders decide who is tainted and who is not,’’ Yadav asked, describing the issue as the result of ‘‘NDA’s desperation after the drubbing in the Lok Sabha elections’’.
The PIL filed by journalist Manoj Narula sought directions for removal of ‘‘tainted’’ ministers — including Yadav, Minister of State for Water Resources Jai Prakash Yadav, Minister of State for Human Resources Development M.A.A. Fatmi and Minister of State for Food and Agriculture Mohammad Taslimuddin — since they face criminal charges.
