Kottayam, December 28: The security ring around Prime Minister A.B. Vajpayee only gets tighter. So nervy are the security guards who’ve accompanied him on his southern sojourn that they gave orders today “to shoot at sight any flying objects over the Taj hotel.”

Fresh barricades and related paraphernalia were thrown around the Taj Retreat at Kumarakom, 16 kms from Kottayam, today. The Prime Minister, who has clarified that he’s chasing a vacation and not treatment, is ensconced within the walls of the hotel. However, he has been receiving visitors.

Outside, police have been swooping down on `suspicious elements’. A Patna-based lawyer Anil Kumar Samiyar (52) was taken into custody from the railway station here this morning, after the police thought he was behaving suspiciously.

The police were reportedly acting on a tip-off from Kochi. The railway police maintained that Samiyar had come to Kochi the other day from Patna and was using the retiring room of the station there. After landing here, he began making frequent calls from the station to the Kumarakom hotel.

Another woman landed in the police’s net of suspicion. Zakina, a lawyer by profession, was arrested by the police on Wednesday night for her unruly performance in front of the Kumarakom hotel. Zakina, who hails from Aluva, was protesting the need for providing so much security to the Prime Minister. She has been remanded to judicial custody.

Such is the pressure on the forces that this morning, Navy personnel were up in arms with the local police when the latter’s boat “trespassed” into Naval territory. The local SP was forced to intervene to settle the issue.

Entry to the famous bird sanctuary here has been completely sealed off from today. Tin sheets have been erected with supporting poles around the barbed compound wall of the hotel to block whatever view one may get of the retreat.
