The president of the underground Kuki Liberation Army, Thangcha Kipgen (40), was killed in a “drunken brawl” near a hotel here, the police said on Friday.
Quoting the hotel manager, the police said the KLA leader was fighting with two men in the presence of two women before his death on Tuesday night. Kipgen was strangled, the police said.
Senior police officers alleged Kipgen’s murder took place in the heat of the moment under the influence of alcohol. They were drinking in the hotel room despite prohibition in the state, the law enforcers alleged.
Around 14 members of seven Kuki insurgent factions reportedly held a meeting at a tourist lodge here on Sunday to discuss unity among various underground factions.
