Continuing with its populist scheme, the BJP government in Karnataka on Thursday decided to distribute free bicycles to boys and girls studying in eighth standard, a sop that had been earlier confined to families living below poverty line.
A total of 7,02,781 students will benefit from the decision taken by the state cabinet chaired by Chief Minister B S Yeddyurappa in Bangalore on Thursday.
The government has earmarked Rs 90 crore for the programme, Minister for Rural Development and Panchayat Raj Shobha Karandlaje told reporters on the cabinet meeting decisions.
The JDS-BJP government had first introduced free distribution of bicycles to girls and then extended it to boys belonging to the BPL families.
