Karnatak today continued its efforts to convince PM Vajpayee to convene a meeting of the Cauvery River Authority before September 9, the day he leaves on a US tour.

While Krishna met the Governor and former chief ministers in Bangalore to explain the state’s viewpoint, his office tried hard to finalise an appointment with the PM.

Though Krishna said that Vajpayee had responded ‘‘positively’’ to his request, he had to reschedule his Delhi trip. First scheduled to leave today evening, sources said the CM would fly out on Friday.

Krishna told the PM that as the Cauvery Monitoring Committee was meeting on September 7 to discuss a distress formula for the CRA’s approval, a meeting could be held soon afterwards.

Krishna called on former chief ministers S.R. Bommai, M. Veerappa Moily, S. Bangarappa and R. Hegde. Yesterday, he met former PM Deve Gowda.

Meanwhile in Mandya, farmers and students blocked traffic on the Bangalore-Mysore road. A Bangalore-bound train was detained for more than 30 minutes . The ongoing stir may intensify from tomorrow, beginning with a hunger strike, a bandh on September 7 and blocking of rail traffic on Sunday, G. madegowda, president of the Committee for Protection of Mandya District Farmers’ Interests said.

Madegowda said the committee had decided to storm the KRS dam and snatch the keys of the crest gates to stop the release of water as the district farmers were facing a severe drought.
