AVIANO AIR BASE (Italy), JUNE 15: Two US F-16 fighter jets took off early today as part of a North Atlantic Treaty Organisation (NATO) show of power over Albania and Macedonia that allied leaders hope will convince Yugoslav president Slobodan Milosevic to back down from his tough policies in Kosovo province.

“This is an exercise intended to demonstrate the alliance’s commitment to peace and stability in the region and the alliance’s ability to project power,” Lt Gen Michael Short, commander of NATO air forces in the alliance’s southern Europe division, said here yesterday. The planes took from air bases in Italy, Greece, France, Germany, Britain and the Adriatic Sea.
