When 18-year-old Kuntal Sai plotted with his friends to stage his own abduction, little did he realise that he will not live to get his share of the ransom amount.

According to the Howrah police, Sampad Mukherjee (21) and Arijit Pal (18) had entered into an ‘‘agreement’’ with Kuntal to abduct him and demand Rs 15 lakh from his businessman father. But Sampad and Arijit later had a change of heart. They decided to kill Kuntal so that they would not have to share the money with him.

On Friday, the duo asked Kuntal to meet them near Chatterjee Haat and then started making anonymous calls to his parents for money. The police finally traced the calls around 11 pm and found Sampad with his hand wounded.

Sampad broke down during police interrogation and said they had hatched the abduction plot because they needed money to start a business. According to police, both Sampad and Arijit had hacked Kuntal to death with a chopper. They have been arrested and Kuntal’s body has been recovered.
