OOF-Oh! I mumble to myself, not one MORE book on 8216;Home Remedies8217;. I don8217;t know about you, but everytime I see a book with these old wives8217; tales, I shudder. Miraculous and magical qualities that heal everything from common cold to cancer are ascribed to every vegetable, fruit and herb. I always begin with enthusiasm and end up as confused as a scrambled egg. However, when Tarla Dalal8217;s Home Remedies hit the stands last month, I sat up and read it. Priced at Rs 95, this handy book is systematically divided into 20 chapters, each dealing with common problems like acidity, headache and sore throat.

Of course, the lady is not a doctor, but her research is impeccable and her recipes tried and tested. Author of 46 cookbooks, the prolific lady has now started the

Total Health series. Home Remedies is the latest to hit the stands.

I8217;d like to share with you the chapter on 8216;Fatigue8217;, which is defined as a feeling of tiredness due to exertion that can be both physical and mental. She then outlines its common causes stress, even lack of activity, medical conditions like low blood sugar, anaemia and even vitamin deficiency. What is interesting about this book is that it gives not just 8216;remedies8217; but also lists foods to be avoided8230; tea and coffee, deep-fried foods, refined foods like maida, pasta, sugar and polished rice, canned and preserved foods and fast foods. It is a good idea to have plenty of fruits and veggies, as also 8216;8216;protein-rich foods dals, cereals, sprouts, two bananas daily, dates and almonds, which will 8216;8216;keep us feeling light yet full8217;8217;. She appends three recipes to this chapter: bean sprouts salad, date honey banana shake and magaz made of besan, sugar and ghee. I put together the bean sprouts salad, found it simple and enjoyed the crunch of the textures and the taste of the dressing enlivened with nimbu juice.

BEAN SPROUTS SALAD

Preparation time: 15 minutes. Serves 4

1-1/4 cups bean sprouts
1-1/2 cups cucumber
1/2 cup diced spring onion
3 tablespoons roasted peanuts for garnish
To be mixed into a dressing:
2 tbsp lemon juice
1 tbsp castor sugar
2 tbsp olive oil
1/2 tsp mustard powder
salt and pepper to taste

Shake dressing ingredients thoroughly in a closed bottle. Chill and use. Combine the bean sprouts, cucumber and spring onions in a bowl and chill. Just before serving, add the dressing and toss. Serve garnished with roasted peanuts.

You can be sure that Tarla Dalal practices what she preaches and must be eating this sprouts salad daily. How else can you explain that, in addition to her 46 cookbooks, in the past two months she has released two new books?
