Three killings and a rifle-snatching incident greeted the West Bengal administration on New Year day. It began with a group of Bangladeshis ambushing two armed guards at 2.15 am, one police constable and a National Volunteer Force personnel, at the Petrapole in Bongaon and snatching their guns. A similar incident occurred in Nadia where brothers, Ajmat Mondal and Niyamat Mondal, fell to BSF bullets when villagers snatched a SLR from them.’
In another development, in Basanti in South 24-Paraganas a group of ‘‘RSP supporters’’ were attacked by the CPI(M) activists who gathered to play in a nearby play ground.
According to DIG Narayan Ghosh, the police constable and NVF personnel were ambushed and then hit with sharp weapons. The miscreants decamped with one rifle and one musket. ‘‘They attacked a Customs godown, but left with the guns,’’ said Ghosh. He said both the BSF and Bangladesh Rifles are holding talks to identify the culprits.
The WB police also had had a tough time in Basanti in South 24-Paraganas when sudden clashes between the activists of Left partners CPI(M) and RSP left one CPI(M) activist dead and four injured.
In Nadia district, all wasn’t well either. In the morning today Ajmat and Niyamat were killed when BSF jawans fired to ward off some villagers who snatched a firearm and an SLR from one of the border guards.
