Even as it has become clear that the post-mortem report of Kiliroor sex racket victim Saari will take at least a week to be finalised, the special investigating team is zeroing in on a local BJP functionary.

This leader, who was expelled from the party recently, reportedly harboured Latha Nair — the third and key accused in the sensational case. He is likely to be arrested shortly, despite the government move to hand over the case to the CBI.

According to sources, this leader played a crucial role in helping Nair abscond after the case broke out, while at the same time he was helping the victim’s parents. He is also said to have facilitated Nair’s surrender at the Adimali court using the services of ‘Collector’ Latheef. Latheef is in judicial custody now as the seventh accused in the case.

Sources added that this leader took Nair to various people — including top-level lawyer-politicians — seeking legal respite. Incidentally, he was at the forefront of BJP’s agitation seeking Nair’s arrest and exposing the alleged sex racket run by her.

He played a crucial role in drafting an agreement on a stamp paper between the victim’s parents and Praveen, the second accused, in which the latter had agreed to pay Rs 5 lakh as compensation to the girl.
