PUNE, Oct 2: A 30-year-old housewife from Naralibag in Warje village was attacked in a most savage manner late on Thursday night by her painter husband who suspected her fidelity.The critically injured housewife, Vandana Waghmare, has been admitted to the Sassoon hospital. Her 35-year-old husband, Shivaji, has been arrested by the Kothrud police on charge of attempted murder.Vandana's four children, all aged below ten years, were terrified witnesses to Shivaji stabbing her with a sickle. Alarmed by the screams of the children, Vandana's uncle Ramesh S Chavan, who stays in an adjoining hut, rushed to the spot only to find the housewife lying in a pool of blood in the door of her residence.Grievously injured Vandana lay at the spot for nearly half an hour as Ramesh made frantic efforts to get a vehicle to shift her to hospital. She could be shifted only after a police vehicle patrolling in the area reached there.Daughter of a landless labourer, Vandana got married to Shivaji ten years back. However, the relations between the two were strained for the past couple of years as Shivaji suspected her fidelity. Ramesh had provided the couple with an accommodation in his neighbourhood recently after Vandana complained that Shivaji was harassing her, the police said.The couple had a heated exchange of words last night. An enraged Shivaji attacked Vandana with a sickle while the housewife was sleeping, the police added.
