KUALA LUMPUR, Sept 12: Amay Khurasia saved India from a potentially embarrassing batting performance in the Commonwealth Games cricket match against Canada on Friday. The No 3 batsman played the sheet anchor on a rather slow wicket that did not aid stroke making.

With India tottering at 102 for seven and Sachin Tendulkar and Ajay Jadeja making two and seven respectively, India were hard pressed to post a challenging total. Khurasia, who later became the first Indian cricketer to be called for dope testing, scored 83 in 136 balls. Only two other Indian batsmen reached double figures. Gagan Khoda made 18 and Rahul Sanghvi, who has never scored a run for India in his seven official One-dayers, scored 22.

Canada’s D Joseph, who was later looking for Tendulkar’s autograph, got the scalp of his life in the third over when he bowled the superstar, who at that point had made just two.

PAKISTAN BEAT KENYA: Unlike their hockey team, the Pakistani cricket team did not allow Kenya any liberties and overwhelmed them by 139 runs in a Group D match. Pakistan now have three points from two matches, including one point from their washed out opening game against Scotland. They meet New Zealand on Tuesday, September 15 to decide which team moves to the semi-final from their pool.

AUSTRALIA WIN: Curtly Ambrose’s threat of making Australia struggle just did not happen as Steve Waugh’s men cruised to a seven-wicket win over Antigua. That put them at four points from two games.

Unless they lose to India on Monday, they are through to the semi-finals. If the game against India is rained off, then Australia will go through with five points, while India, with one no result against Antigua and one win over Canada, will have only four points.
