GUWAHATI, July 15: Mohun Bagan registered a consolation victory today when they beat Goa’s Dempo Sports Club 3-1 to gain the third spot of the Kalyani Black Label Federation Cup football tournament here.

Abdul Khalique scored a brace, while Nigerian Cheema Okerie netted one for Bagan. Joao Soares replied for Dempo. The winners led by a goal during half time.

The Calcutta club dominated the match throughout the game shrugging off memories of their humiliating 4-1 defeat in the hands of arch rivals East Bengal in the semi-finals on Sunday in Calcutta.

Khalique scored the first goal when he lobbed in after getting a measured pass from Basudev Mondal in the 11th minute.

Mondal was at it again when he gave a quick pass to Okerie, who headed in at the 52nd minute.

For the Goans, Soares scored with a powerful left-footer from 20 yards in the 62nd minute, raising the Dempo hopes.

But eight minutes later, Khalique nodded in a centre from Satyajit to put paid to the Goan aspirations.
