PUNE, Jan 28: The 88,000-odd Khadki residents putting up with severe water shortage for the entire last year can now hope for some reprieve.
The water booster installed by Khadki Cantonment Board (KCB) on its mainhead reservoir to improve the water pressure is expected to become functional by the first week of February.
Residents have been reeling under a severe water crisis making do with a few hours of water supply at low pressure for the many months now. The slum-dwellers residing at Rajiv Gandhi Nagar, Indira Gandhi Nagar, Mahadeowadi and Gaddi Adda in particular had been severely hit by the problem. The Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) has agreed to allocate Rs 1.20 crore towards the erection of a water sump and a separate pipeline to combat the water problem.
Former vice president Suresh Kamble however, alleged that the pace of work on the sump was very slow and it would take a long time before the residents of Khadki would be able to get water at adequate pressure. Elected members along with local MLA Rambhau Moze had held a joint meeting with PMC Commissioner Rajiv Agarwal following which the PMC, Public Works Department (PWD) and KCB had decided to create a network of six inch and 12 inch pipes throughout the cantonment.
“It is indeed disheartening to note that the slum-dwellers of Khadki will continue without water,” he said.
