April 28: Pressing the panic button, Kenya XI, being lured into a trap by the MCA President’s XI boys survived a scare before forcing a draw in the three-day friendly fixture at the Wankhede Stadium on Friday.
Set to score 226 in two sessions, Kenya XI were cruising towards the target being placed at 185 for 3. They needed another 45 runs from nine overs and sensible batting should have seen them through. But they made haste falling to unnecessary shots that saw MCA XI reverse scales.
MCA XI claimed five more wickets as the Kenyans searched for quick and easy runs. The hosts now wanted to go for the kill claiming the last two wickets in four overs but the visitors chose to play safe, pushing and prodding, ensuring that it didn’t have to face the humiliation of a defeat.
Following a sporting declaration, Kenya were giving a fluent start by openers Ravindu Shah (97, 176m, 119b, 13×4, 1×6) and Kennedy Otieno (38, 91m, 61b, 4×4, 1×6) who shared a 112-run stand.
No. 5 batsman Thomas Odoyo made 34 (62b, 4×4) but the others just failed to come good. Seven of the Kenya XI batsmen could not even reach double figures including three ducks.
Left-arm spinner Nishit Shetty was the most successful for MCA XI claiming 4 for 40 off 15 overs while left-arm seamer Sandeep Dahad picked up 3 for 34 off 10 overs.
Earlier, MCA XI resuming at 70 for 2 declared its second innings at 199 for 8. Overnight batsman Praful Dhule made the highest 52 (182m, 105b, 4×4, 1×6) while Milind Tamhane made 24 (2×4).
