CHANDIGARH, Jan 27: Veteran Amarjeet Kaypee and Haryana allrounder Pankaj Thakur fashioned hosts North Zone’s easy 47-run win over Headquarters in the Food Corporation of India Inter-Zonal cricket tournament here at the Sector 16 Cricket Stadium today.
In another match played at the Gursagar ground, East Zone beat South Zone by five wickets.
Kaypee hit an unbeaten 60 while Delhi batsmen Akash Malhotra scored 45 as North got to 182 for eight in the allotted 40 overs. Pankaj Thakur too chipped in with 25.
For Headquarters, Bal Krishan took three for 33.
In reply, Headquarters were bowled out for 135, with only Sanjeev Kohli (34) and A Katyal (30) offering any resistance. Pankaj Thakur bowled his off-spinners intelligently and had a rich haul of 4 for 15. East Zone owed their win to allrounder Jaideep Mukherjee (50 n.o. and 2 for 18). South made 165 for 6, with D S Sridhar top scoring with 55. Apart from Mukherjee’s two wickets, W Majumdar too bagged two for 38.
East Zone chased the runs quite comfortably as Mukherjee and D Sarkar (34) batted sensibly. Knowing that their side will win if they keep their wickets intact the two played out the early threat by the rival bowlers and maintained the run rate as well.
For the losers, K Ravi and Chandrashekhar took two wickets each but of no avail.
