CHENNAI, DEC 7: There is no safety for the lives and properties of people in Tamil Nadu, former chief minister J Jayalalitha has said.

In a press release on Saturday, she said that Chief Minister M Karunanidhi has lost total control over the maintainence of law and order in the State. The recent communal clashes in Southern districts, the violent incidents at Coimbatore, the bomb blast in Udumalpet and Saturday’s bomb blasts in trains at Trichy, Erode and Alleppey, explicitly showed the inability of Karunanidhi to curb the violence culture. The people are under the grip of constant fear and terror, she said. Jayalalitha said that it was her duty to bring to the knowledge of the President of India that it would be dangerous for the entire nation to allow the Karunanidhi government to continue. She claimed that during her regime, the activities of anti-social elements and religious fanatics were curtailed and they were kept at the “appropriate” place.

Whenever the police took action against those who indulged in violence or instigated violence, ruling DMK ministers, MPs and MLAs intervened and set them at liberty. The police officials concerned, who took necessary action, were transferred, she said adding that for political gains, Karunanidhi has ordered the release of the culprits and permitted them to move around freely.Karunanidhi should, therefore, take responsibility for all these incidents and step down, she said.

In a statement, TMC president GK Moopanar regretted the atrocious killing of innocent people at public places. The State Government should, without any hesitation, take all efforts boldly to curtail such incidents. Comparing extremism to a plant full of thorns, he said that its main root should be pulled out and destroyed, much before it spreaded roots and grew a big tree. If an illusion is created to the effect that the police has totally become inert because of the growing violent incidents, the people will lose faith in the government, he said.
