Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M Karunanidhi, while slamming the Kerala government move to construct an additional dam near Periyar dam and also its decision to send an environment impact assessment team, has put the onus of resolving the contentious Mullaiperiyar dam issue on the Centre. “The Centre should take steps to find a solution to the (Mullaiperiyar) issue keeping in mind that Tamil Nadu also a part of India,” he said, writing in the DMK mouthpiece Murasoli. Karunanidhi decried as “contempt of the Supreme Court judgement” the Kerala government unilaterally setting up an environmental assessment committee to examine Mullaiperiyar dam, which is a major bone of contention between the two states.
