Maintaining that the DMK always stood for a peaceful solution in Sri Lanka, Chief Minister M Karunanidhi sought to remind Congressmen in the state that slain Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi was working closely with the DMK in 1989 to solve the Lanka crisis.Karunanidhi’s comments at the inauguration of the IT Corridor that was rechristened Rajiv Gandhi Road, come at a time when several Congress leaders in the state have expressed their displeasure over the recent pro-LTTE statements made by certain allies of the DMK.“As a political party and as the party in power, the DMK has always taken the stand that Tamils in Sri Lanka should be protected. Even though DMK and Congress were in Opposition camps, Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi himself had stated during public functions in Coimbatore and Tiruchy in 1989 that his Government was working closely with the state Government, headed by M Karunanidhi, to solve the crisis in Lanka,” Karunanidhi said. “We don’t want war in Sri Lanka. Our stand is not an eye for an eye. All we want is peace for the Tamils. For that, we should follow Gandhiji’s way,” he added.
