BANGALORE, June 9: Violence erupted at the National Games today when a partisan home crowd went berserk at the Bangalore Football Stadium where the second semi-final of the football championship between Karnataka and Kerala was being played.
A section of the crowd, incensed by the referee’s decision to award a penalty to Kerala towards the fag end of the match, hurled chairs and bottles and manhandled some Kerala sportsmen, who had come to watch the match.
The trouble in the gallery started immediately after Jo Paul Ancheri converted the spotkick to give Kerala a 2-0 lead. Kerala eventually won the match 2-0 to move into the final.
The volleyball players, A Thaha, Abubecker and Renny Thomas, who were cheering the Kerala team after it scored the second goal to seal victory against the hosts with about a minute remaining, were forcibly taken inside the Police Aid Post at the stadium, and allegedly beaten up by some local policemen. Even as the three players were being led to the Post, one of them produced his identity card and pleaded to be released. But, a plainclothesman was seen hitting one of the players on his back and in the face in full public view.
