BANGALORE, August 3: The Karnataka government has aborted the move to conduct a re-survey on child labour in the State. Voluntary organisations had raised a hue and cry over the original survey, which put the figure of child workers at just 96,520, against the 35 lakh claimed by NGOs. The voluntary organisations alleged that the survey was only an effort to hide the enormity of the situation, but the government has now decided to assume the survey findings to be authentic. The survey was undertaken in response to a Supreme Court directive, and the failure to arrive at a credible outcome is likely to have serious legal implications.
