LUCKNOW, AUGUST 8: The widow of Kargil martyr Rifleman Ram Nihore Yadav was shot dead, allegedly by two goons hired by her father-in-law, yesterday in Sultanpur, UP.

Shivkumari, 19, was returning home with her brother and mother after collecting her husband’s pension from the district headquarters when the cycle-borne assailants shot her dead near Sarai Achal village. She had been living with her parents ever since her father-in-law Ram Adhar filed a case claiming the compensation announced by the state government and the army for the deceased man’s family. Shivkumari had received the compensation which amounted to Rs 17 lakh.

The Sultanpur police say the case is still under investigation and no arrests have been made.

Shivkumari’s family had demanded police protection since her father-in-law filed the case. The family says the police refused to heed to the request. Ram Adhar had wanted the money to be kept in a joint account. He later moved the court claiming that Shivkumari was not his daughter-in-law and the compensation be given to him.

On July 26, when the nation was celebrating the first anniversary of Kargil victory, the goons allegedly hired by her in-laws fired at the house of Shivkumari’s father, Rathi Lal. Her family alleges that the police refused to register an FIR.

Ram Nihore Yadav was killed in Kargil on June 17 last year. Ever since she got the compensation amount and the promise of a petrol pump dealership, many persons had visited her house with marriage proposals. The persons included a PCS officer and also a police officer posted at Kothwali Dehath, her relatives said.
