NEW DELHI, JULY 10: Prime Minister Atal Behari Vajpayee today said the operations to evict the Pakistan Army intruders from the Kargil sector have reached a turning point, following the string of successes by the Army and the Air Force over the past few days.

Vajpayee made this observation, while speaking to reporters, soon after a 35-minute briefing by top Army commanders on the Kargil situation in the operations room of the Directorate General of Military Operations, South Block, today. This briefing was the first of its kind since the Kargil conflict began.

Earlier, during an address to the three Service chiefs and Army commanders, the Prime Minister said: “The enemy’s intrusion and aggression in Kargil has now been decisively turned back. Most pockets have already been cleared. There, our troops are back on the Line of Control (LoC). Residual Pak forces will leave or be evicted from south of the LoC in the entire Kargil sector.”About setting a time-frame for the completion of these operations, thePrime Minister told reporters that “the details have to be worked out”. He, however, parried questions on whether he had received any communication from his Pakistani counterpart Nawaz Sharif or if the Pakistani intruders are withdrawing.

This is a historic moment for all of us… It (the operation) will go down in the annals of our military history as another outstanding example of the valour, discipline and dedication of our armed forces.”

He added: “I know how impossible the terrain is. I also know what great demands were placed on the sense of dedication of our troops whocome from all states of our country. We asked them to achieve extremely difficult tasks. These they fulfilled in more than abundant measure.
