Veteran CPI(ML) leader Kanu Sanyal, along with his supporters, was arrested today for staging a ‘‘rail roko’’ agitation, which held up the Delhi-bound Rajdhani Express at the New Jalpaiguri railway station, sources said.
Sanyal who is the West Bengal Tea Garden Labour Union General Secretary, launched the 20-minute ‘‘rail roko’’ in protest against the failure of the management of Paharghumia tea garden closed for three weeks now throwing 1,000 labourers out of jobs, in holding talks.
The Guwahati-New Delhi Rajdhani Express was detained for 20 minutes from 12:30 pm because of the ‘‘rail roko’’ agitation. The train left after the arrest of Sanyal and clearing of the tracks of protesters, the sources said.
Sanyal, along with Charu Majumdar are believed to be the founding fathers of the Naxalite movement from Naxalbari in North Bengal in 1967 after breaking away from the CPI(M). The CPI(ML) was formed in 1969. — PTI
