July 29: Director of Institute of Distance Education, University of Mumbai M S Kambli has been given the additional charge of Registrar. According to a varsity senate member, the management council entrusted the decision to nominate a candidate for the post with vice chancellor Snehalata Deshmukh.
Following the present registrar Jairam Chavan’s decision to seek voluntary retirement and relinquish charge on July 31, the campus has been abuzz with speculation regarding the candidature of the present deputy registrar of the university, A M Murudkar who also happened to be the seniormost person. Deshmukh however dismissed the speculation as baseless.
“The delay in selecting the candidate for the post of registrar is due to a a letter issued by the state government to the University forbidding advertisement for the post until further notice as it is revising the qualification for the candidature of this post,” she observed and added, “I requested Chavan to continue due to the impasse created by the state government notification. But he insisted on relinquishing his charge on July 31. Hence the temporary nomination of Kambli.”
The secretary of Higher and Technical education, N L Lakhanpal told Express Newsline, “The government has retained the earlier qualification – that a candidate applying for the post must be a professor. We have already intimated the university to this effect.”
The re-think on the qualification of the post of registrar was due to a request made by Maharashtra Underprivileged Teachers Association in this regard to the state government, explained Lakhanpal.
On receipt of the revised eligibility the vice-chancellor expressed her satisfaction over the temporary nomination of Kambli and added that Murudkar did not qualify for the post.
“In any case, it is not a promotion, rather a burden,” said Kambli when contacted. Yet to receive an official intimation about his additional charge, he was quick to add that the “burden was pleasurable.”A freedom fighter, Kambli has been a member of several councils of the university.
A post-graduate in economics, he began his career as a lecturer in Kirti College and went on to become the vice-principal of Lala Lajpat Rai College and principal of the Karandikar and Chinai colleges before assuming the present charge.
