`Caliche’, the new three female band have come out with an album –Adittappa – which could be termed as a foot tapping album (if you feel inclined to do so). Side `A’ begins with Aditappa which is definitely one of the high spots of the album. The use of vocals in place of musical instruments in Dha Dhina Dhin Dha has a very pleasant effect.

Side `B’ begins with Pyar Nahin which makes you want to say aur nahin

and hearing Margayee one could say Margaya. The lyrics of the songs could have been better. There is extensive use of drums and dholaks giving the songs a Jhankarish feel. Atleast, the voices are in sync with each other. Music with “disco instrumentation”, it will appeal to disco freaks. Try it if you must.

Dipping into their rich archives once more, HMV gives you a delightful package Legends, Manna Dey. Eighty seven tracks, in the maestro’s clear, rich voice,in a pack of five, surely makes for a treasure worth possessing. What makes for more interesting listening is the li’l interspersions by people who knew the man, or are just plain admirers of his singing and notations. A little booklet accompanying the collection tells you a bit about the legend himself, in a lot of his own words, which makes for a very poignant experience. Among the people who have pearls of wisdom to share about Mannada are Mahendra Kapoor, Kavi Pradeep, Lata Mangeshkar and of course, the man himself, who is a picture of complete modesty. This is a collection that will make a great gift, first to yourself, and then to someone who admires that kind of stuff. Doesn’t incapacitate you money-wise either.
