Maria Sharapova’s bid to become the world’s top-ranked player at the German Open ended Friday with a quarterfinal loss to Justine Henin-Hardenne. The Belgian, riding a 14-match winning streak, threw her arms up in joy after she blasted a forehand down the line to win the match 6-2, 6-4 at the $1.3 million (euro1 million) event, a tuneup for the French Open.
Sharapova needed to win the event to dislodge Lindsay Davenport from the top of the rankings, but ran into one of the world’s best clay-court players.
