Bangalore, April 16: Sunil Joshi will lead Karnataka in the Ranji Trophy cricket final against Madhya Pradesh starting April 19 at the KSCA Stadium.

The state selectors, who met on Friday evening, decided to make Joshi the captain, but will allow Anil Kumble to take over if the Board of Control for Cricket in India permits him to play the final.

“As of now, the Board wants the four Karnataka players, Kumble, Javagal Srinath, Venkatesh Prasad and Rahul Dravid, to assemble in Mumbai on the morning of April 23 which is the final day of the Ranji final,” said Sudhakar Rao, assistant secretary of KSCA.

“We are hoping to get permission for Kumble and Dravid to report in the evening. That way they can take the afternoon flight from Bangalore to Mumbai. The Emirates flight out of Mumbai to England is at 7 p.m. only. If they are permitted, we will miss these two only for the last two sessions of the Ranji final,” he added.

The Karnataka players in the National team are expected to arrive in Bangalore onApril 18. KSCA, thus, has named 14 players, but the final XI will be named only on the morning of the match.
