MONACO, June 13: Michael Johnson and other injured American athletes may be allowed to defend their titles at the World Championships despite missing the US trials, the International Amateur Athletic Federation said.

“The IAAF could consider the possibility of giving them a wild card or invitation,” the governing body’s spokesman Giorgio Reineri said. “We don’t want to get involved in the politics of the selection process of the US Federation,” he said.

“But given the hypothesis, it could consider the cases of Johnson and other athletes if the US decides to ask the IAAF for something special in extraordinary circumstances because they could not take part in the trials not for capricious reasons but real physical problems.”

Only athletes who finish in the top three at the US Championships are eligible for the American team, according to their rules.
