He made the world’s smallest pair of working scissors and a safety razor by hand and made it to the Guinness Book of World Records. A first class diploma engineer, he had always wanted to go into research studies, but today Ramesh Chand Dhiman, 29, is unemployed and is planning to raise earthworms for a living.Confused and disheartened, it is difficult to imagine this is the same youth who once had stars in his eyes.Ramesh broke world records in 1998 when he, without using machines or even a magnifying glass for help, made the smallest pair of scissors, measuring 3.12 mm, in five hours and a safety razor, measuring 4.50 mm, in 25 hours (24 hours according to the Guinness Book of World Records website). But he’s unemployed now, and is even sitting for exams for clerical jobs. He has also formed an NGO and applied for a vermiculture project.‘‘After all, one has to think of earning his bread and butter,’’ says Ramesh. ‘‘Otherwise people will laugh at me. They will say, ‘there goes the world record-holder who has nothing to do in life’.’’Ramesh belongs to a poor backward caste family and his father, Kalu, is a carpenter. He has two brothers, both factory workers. While his brothers could not complete their education, Ramesh topped the high school exams in his school. He then went on to pursue a diploma course in engineering from the Government Polytechnic at Moradabad and passed out with first division.Ramesh now runs an NGO called Parhit Vikas Sansthan and has applied to CAPART for a vermiculture project. ‘‘If all goes well, I’ll be soon busy, raising earthworms,’’ he says.
