Setting off speculation in the time of polls for Rashtrapati Bhavan, President K R Narayanan has rejected the Government’s recommendation and in his capacity as Visitor appointed Karan Singh as Chancellor of New Delhi’s Jawaharlal Nehru University.

Singh, incidentally, had contested against Prime Minister A B Vajpayee in the 1999 Lok Sabha polls from Lucknow.

The Government had recommended the name of scientist M G K Menon. Menon, Karan Singh and M G More, a former Chancellor, were the three names sent by JNU’s executive committee and the HRD Ministry had recommended Menon.

When contacted, Karan Singh confirmed his appointment but said he was unaware Narayanan had chosen him over the government’s recommendation. HRD Minister Murli Manohar Joshi declined to comment but when pressed, said: ‘‘It is the President’s prerogative.’’
