MUMBAI, Feb 20: Vivek Jhaveri and Medini Sharma won the under-16 boys’ and girls’ titles respectively of the MSSA-Colgate 23rd Inter-schools tennis tournament at Garden Tennis Academy, Azad Maidan today.

Jhaveri (Manav Mandir) packed Gavryl Fernandes (Rajhans Vidyalaya) 6-3, 6-3 while Medini (Gyan Kendra) surpassed Johann Fernandes (St Theresa’s) 6-1, 7-6 (7-5) in a closely contested final.

“My backhand and first serve worked very well and Gavy (Fernandes) could not play his natural game,” said Jhaveri after the match. Jhaveri had a stint in South Africa last year with an ITF course. “That really helped me to be mentally strong and now, I can play big points,” added Jhaveri.

Rishi Behl of Utpal Sangavi won a thrilling final against Jay Mehta and surprised everybody by winning the boys under-14 title with score reading 6-3, 3-6, 7-6 (8-6).

Mehta who played three matches yesterday and helped his school to win the team championship, lost the concentration during tie-breaker and Behl capitalised towin the title.

Soumya Kowtha, K Narasimhan, Kanisha Mehta, Arnav Jain and Roshi Luthra were the other titlists in various age groups.

Results (all finals): Boys’ under-16: Vivek Jhaveri (Manav Mandir) bt Gavryl Fernandes (Rajhans Vidyalaya) 6-3, 6-3; Under-14: Rishi Behl (Utpal Sanghvi) bt Jay Mehta (Cathedral and John Connon) 6-3, 3-6, 7-6 (8-6); Under-12: Keshavan Narasimhan (St Theesa’s) bt Krishank Shah (St Xavier’s) 6-4, 6-1; Under-10: Arnav Jain (Jasudben) bt Ankesh Bhargava (Bhavans AH Wadia) 6-0, 6-1.

Girls’ under-16: Medini Sharma (Gyan Kendra) bt Johann Fernandes (St Theresa’s) 6-1, 7-6 (7-5); Soumya Kowtha (St Anne’s) bt Anuja Parikh (JB Petit) 6-1, 4-6, 6-0; Under-12: Kanisha Mehta (Convents Girls) bt Moneeza Kalhan Siddiqui (St Anne’s) 6-0, 6-3; Under-10: Roshni Luthra (Arya Vidya Mandir) bt Ananya Muzumdar (Hasanat) 6-1, 6-1.
