PATNA, AUG 18: BJP Legislators do not seem ready to toe the party line of supporting Babulal Marandi for the chief minister of Jharkhand.

According to sources in the party, a rebellion is brewing in the state unit with some legislators from Jharkhand reportedly threatening to vote against Marandi.

Sensing the mood of the legislators, the BJP leadership has arranged a `reorientation class’ for these legislators and they now undergoing training in Ranchi under the watchful eyes of party general secretary Govindacharya.

Party leaders have been projecting Babulal Marandi as the next chief minister much to the ire of yet another claimant, Karia Munda who reportedly enjoys the support of the BJP workers. The sources say that senior BJP leaders like Devidas Apte back Karia Munda. They maintain that at least 12 legislators out of 32 are opposed to Marandi and feel he would not prove to be effective as chief minister.

Although the state BJP leaders, when contacted, strongly denied any rift in the party on Marandi’s candidature, they were cautious to add that any candidate who wished to become the chief minister should be a candidate of the NDA.

Before leaving to attend the training camp, Leader of the Opposition Sushil Mody told The Indian Express: “There was nothing unusual. It was a prearranged affair. Early, these legislators were to meet in Patna, but since the party is in favour of formation of a Jharkhand unit, it was decided that they should meet in Jharkhand region.”
