MUMBAI, NOV 14: Jet Airways, the biggest airline in the private sector, today inaugurated its first fully owned Boeing 737-400 aircraft at a function at Mumbai airport inaugurated by Chief Minister Manohar Joshi.
According to the airline’s chairman Naresh Goyal, this will be the first of a fleet of ten aircrafts for which orders have been placed at a total cost of US $ 375 million.
While the second aircraft will be delivered later in November, the rest will be delivered through the year 2000 in a phased manner, Goyal said.
The airline which already operates a fleet of 15 aircrafts, has taken an option of ten new aircrafts, deliveries of which will commence from 2001. These aircrafts could either be the new generation 737-700s or 800s depending upon the market conditions, Goyal said.
Taking off from where the Chief Minister let off about big airlines operating on smaller routes, Goyal promised that Jet airways will begin operating between smaller cities for which it will acquire 50-70 seater aircrafts. Among the aircrafts being considered, are the Canadian Dash 8, Bombardier and ATR aircraft.
