PUNE, Jan 17: In a gruesome mishap, five persons were killed and 10 injured when a tempo trax jeep collided head-on with a heavy goods truck near Wagholi on the Pune-Ahmednagar Road this morning.

The victims belonged to John family staying near Wakdewadi at Shivajinagar. They were proceeding to Aurangabad to attend an engagement ceremony. Among the deceased included an eight year-old-girl.

The mishap occured around 7.45 am near Santosh dhaba at Wagholi. The jeep (MH14 P 9771) was completely mangled following the collision. Eye-witnesses said the jeep driver was attempting to overtake a PMT bus when it dashed against the truck carrying two-wheelers.

Three persons, including the jeep driver, were killed on the spot. They included Suresh Baburao Gawde (22), Archana Sunil John (8), and Sharad William John (26). Two others Sushama Sunil John (26) and Anita Anil John (20) who were seriously injured succumbed while being taken to the Sassoon hospital.

The injured included five-year-old Dolly Sunil John, Sunil William John (30), Tarabai William John (65), Rajendra Ramdas Verma (39), Amol Anil John (15), Anil William John (38), Akshada Anil John (7), Rajendra Ramdas Verma (39), Amar Chowdhary, Amarsingh Yadav (28), Sudhir Marx Avchite (38). They have been admitted to the Sassoon and other hospitals. The John family comprised four brothers Sunil, Anil, Sharad and Bharat. Bharat stayed back at home as his son was preparing for his examinations.

The family was proceeding to Aurangabad for the engagement ceremony of Anil’s brother-in-law Deepak. The function was scheduled to be held in the evening. The family had hired the tempo trax and had left the home around 6.30 am. They made a brief halt at Chandannangar petrol pump. Of the deceased Sushama John was pregnant, while Sharad John had recently been engaged. His marriage was scheduled in May.
