CHENNAI, March 3: AIADMK general secretary J Jayalalitha has expressed her gratitude to the electorate for enabling the AIADMK-Bharatiya Janata Party front to win 30 out of 39 Lok Sabha constituencies in the state.
In a statement on Tuesday, Jayalalitha said she had maintained from the beginning of the electoral battle that people favoured the front led by the AIADMK. The opinion polls that predicted massive victory for the DMK front were conducted by forces that were inimical to the AIADMK, she charged, adding Chief Minister M Karunanidhi was behind such opinion and exit polls.
Jayalalitha said that even in the 10 constituencies, including one in Pondicherry, in which the DMK front had won, she had received information that the ruling partymen indulged in violence and abused the administrative machinery. Despite such misuse of power, the DMK front scored victory in the 10 constituencies with low margins because of the overwhelming support of the electorate to the AIADMK-led front, she asserted.
Whilethe electorate supported the democratic and progressive forces led by the AIADMK, some newspapers and private TV channels functioned in a partisan manner that was detrimental to the interests of the AIADMK, she said.
She assured AIADMK would never move away from policies committed to the welfare of the people. The members elected to the Lok Sabha will concentrate on the socio-economic development of the constituencies, she added.
