Chief Minister J. Jayalalithaa on Monday defended SP K. Premkumar’s action of performing a special puja at a temple before filing the chargesheet in the Sankararaman murder case in which the two seer’s of the Kanchi Kamakoti Mutt are the main accused.
‘‘What is wrong in a police officer offering prayers to a God he believes in before filing the chargesheet in a case he has been investigating?’’ she said during the thanks-giving motion to the Governor’s Address in the Assembly today.
‘‘There is no law to prevent police personnel from visiting places of worship. Policemen are also like other citizens and have the right to worship the gods they believe in,’’ she said.
The Chief Minister was replying to a query of Congress MLA S.G. Vinayagamoorthi, on if the officer had done so on orders from anyone. The CM pointed out that it was a part of the Indian culture for any one to offer prayers before beginning any important work. It was on this basis that the SP had performed special puja at a temple.
