Move over “laptop” Naidu, step aside “powerpoint” Kalam, “DVD” Jaswant is here! Union Finance Minister Jaswant Singh has a surprise in store for his audience at The Financial Express – Electrolux Awards for Women in Business here on Thursday evening.
Singh has chosen the FE awards function to premiere a new 30-minute video presentation on the Indian economy, titled “India: On Accelerated Growth Track.”
The DVD presentation has been prepared for the Finance Ministry to project the rapid strides the Indian economy has made in the recent past.
Singh will give away the first ever awards for “Women in Business” at a classy function Thursday evening at Mumbai’s Oberoi Regal Room. The who’s who of the Indian corporate and financial sector are expected to be present at the function to see which woman CEO gets the “FE-Electrolux Award for Lifetime Achievement in Business”.
The other award categories include “Woman Entrepreneur of the Year”, “Woman Professional of the Year” and “Knowledge Economy Person of the Year”.
The half-hour DVD presentation will subsequently be aired on the electronic media and shown at road shows across the world aimed at soliciting new investment into a growing Indian economy.
Singh’s message: this year’s 8.0 per cent rate of growth is not a flash in the pan, it is part of a new trend rate of accelerated growth.
After growing at near zero per cent from 1900 to 1950, the Indian economy grew at 3.5 per cent 1950-1980 and 5.5 per cent between 1980 and 2000. The rate of growth in 2000-2010 is expected to be over 7.0 per cent , with a target rate of 8.0 per cent .
